At West Construction, we know that every project is shaped not only by experience, but also by the fresh perspective of team members who are learning and growing through each opportunity. In a fast-paced industry like construction, those early experiences can provide valuable insight into the coordination, communication, and teamwork that drive a project forward. We wanted to highlight that perspective by hearing from team members who are building their knowledge in the field while contributing to meaningful work in real time.

My first year as an Assistant Project Manager at West Construction has been an incredible learning experience. Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to assist with the Currie Park project, which has given me hands-on experience with how much coordination, communication, and teamwork it takes to keep a project moving forward.
Coming into this role, I knew construction would be fast-paced, but assisting on a project like Currie Park has shown me just how much planning, problem-solving, and collaboration goes into every phase of construction. Being involved in the day-to-day progress of the project has helped me gain a better understanding of how many moving parts are involved in bringing a project from plans on paper to something being built in real life.
Throughout the project, I’ve had the opportunity to assist with different aspects of coordination and project support. From reviewing plans and helping coordinate with subcontractors to attending site walks and observing the work taking place in the field, every day has brought a new opportunity to learn. Seeing the work happen on site and watching the project develop has been one of the most rewarding parts of my first year in this role.
Working closely with the Senior Project Manager has also helped me gain a great deal of knowledge throughout the project. He has taken the time to walk me through field challenges, explain how to approach solving problems on site, and guide me when correcting small mistakes along the way. His patience and willingness to teach have been a huge help in helping me grow and better understand the responsibilities that come with managing a construction project.
I’ve also learned so much from working alongside the superintendents and site crews on the project. Being able to observe their experience in the field and see how they handle day-to-day operations has helped me better understand how everything comes together on a construction site. Their knowledge, hard work, and willingness to answer questions have been a big part of my learning process this past year.
The Currie Park project has also given me the opportunity to be part of community-focused events such as the groundbreaking ceremony and project updates. It has been exciting to see the community’s interest and support for the project and to know that the work we are doing will help create a space that people will enjoy for years to come.
What I appreciate the most about this experience is the team I have the opportunity to work with. I’m incredibly grateful for the project managers, superintendents, site crews, and subcontractors who have taken the time to answer my questions, share their knowledge, and guide me throughout this past year. Their support has played a huge role in helping me grow and gain confidence in my position.
Construction is truly a team effort, and being surrounded by experienced professionals who are passionate about what they do has made this first year both rewarding and motivating. I’m proud to be part of the West Construction team and grateful for the opportunity to assist in a project that will have a lasting impact on the community. As the Currie Park project continues to move forward, I’m excited to keep learning and growing in my role.
