City of Coral Gables Fire House No. 4 Recognized for Sustainable Design and Construction

West Construction, Inc. is proud to announce that has officially earned LEED v4 Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), recognizing the project’s commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and occupant wellness. The certification was awarded in July 2026 under the LEED v4 Building Design and Construction (BD+C): New Construction rating system.

This milestone reflects the collaborative efforts of the City of Coral Gables, the design team, consultants, and construction partners to deliver a modern public safety facility that not only serves the community but also promotes long-term environmental stewardship.

The USGBC awarded the project 54 points, recognizing Fire House No. 4 as a showcase example of sustainable building practices and leadership within the construction industry.

Building for Performance and Sustainability

From the earliest stages of planning through construction, sustainability was integrated into every phase of the project. The new two-story fire station was designed to reduce environmental impacts while creating a healthier, more efficient workplace for first responders.

Among the project’s sustainable features are:

EV Charging Station
Battery Recycling Bin
  • Energy-efficient building systems that achieve more than 20% energy savings compared to the ASHRAE 90.1 baseline through a high-performance building envelope, lighting, HVAC, and plumbing systems.
  • Water conservation measures, including native and drought-tolerant landscaping, WaterSense plumbing fixtures, and sub-metering to monitor water consumption.
  • Community-focused site amenities, such as a public park, bicycle racks, electric vehicle charging stations, and paving materials selected to reduce the heat island effect.
  • Construction waste diversion, with nearly 80% of construction debris recycled instead of sent to landfills.
  • Healthy building materials, including low-emitting paints, flooring, ceilings, insulation, MERV 13 filtration, and enhanced indoor air quality measures that support firefighter health and wellness.
  • Operational sustainability initiatives, including green cleaning policies, integrated pest management practices, and inclusive all-gender ADA restrooms with complimentary menstrual hygiene products.

A Commitment to Building Better Communities

At West Construction, we believe exceptional public facilities should do more than meet today’s needs—they should create lasting value for the communities they serve.

The LEED Silver certification of Coral Gables Fire House No. 4 demonstrates how thoughtful planning, quality construction, and sustainable building practices can come together to deliver resilient, efficient, and community-focused public infrastructure.

We are honored to have contributed to this achievement alongside the City of Coral Gables and everyone involved in bringing this project to life.

Congratulations to the entire project team on this outstanding accomplishment!
